Most iron filters for well water can be used to remove two iron types from water: Ferrous and ferric.

- Backwashing filtration systems using greensand or similar media trap ferric iron and also oxidize and then trap ferrous iron. At some point all accumulated iron is rinsed out of the system. How to Remove Iron from Well Water – The Different Types of Whole House Iron Filters
Types of Iron
There are four types of iron contamination that can be found in water:
- Ferrous iron (Fe2+) – Clear-water iron is soluble and occurs in anaerobic groundwater. Because it’s soluble it doesn’t cause turbidity or discoloration. The water may even come out of your taps and faucets all nice and clear. Eventually, though, it turns red after due to oxygen exposure.
